Protection connects Hammer of Justice, Consecration and shields. Retribution is a separate Exorcism / Divine Storm direction; it is not a variation that needs every Protection talent.

What to draft during a run

For Protection, prioritize the hammer–ground–shield interactions. For Retribution, use Exorcism and Divine Storm as the damage direction. Do not assume a capstone-altered opening spell is the class’s untalented starter.
